A Much-Needed Exhibition Win
posted: 10/18/2009 at 10:00 PM

Considering all that is expected of the Trail Blazers this season, is it possible to say a pre-season win was a big victory? In this case, absolutely.

It wasn't just that the Blazers came from 12 down in the final eight minutes, it was how they came back that made this victory seem so vital to this team, and a very loud Rose Garden crowd.

Not only did Brandon Roy seem to gain some traction in this exhibition season, and shake off some summer rust, but Greg Oden played perhaps the most dominant stretch of basketball in his NBA career.

For the most part, Denver went with its regular-season rotation down the stretch of this game, and used its powerful front court lineup of Kenyon Martin, Nene, and Chris Anderson. Oden, who was saddled with foul trouble through most of the game, came alive during a five-minute stretch in the final quarter and literally carried his team to the victory.

During that stretch, Oden had 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots. He powered through Martin and Nene, who were doubling him, several times. And, threw down a rim-rocking jam on Anderson, who had come from the weak side to attempt one his trademark blocked shots. Oden had a tip in, a three-point play where he reversed the ball up off the glass with his left hand, and went 6 for 6 from the free-throw line.

Most importantly, Oden was having fun. He wanted the ball, was moving Denver's big defenders around with relative ease, and was composed and in control. He ended the game with 16 points and 7 rebounds, in just under 16 minutes of playing time. In the end, this was another example of Oden's potential dominance, if he can stay on the floor. He fouled out of this game with two and a-half minutes left.

Andre Miller was also very good during the fourth-quarter run, and lead the team in scoring with 18 points. Brandon Roy had 12, and Juwan Howard, who continues to show that he's going to demand minutes, had 10 points and 5 rebounds. Howard got the start at the power-forward spot for LaMarcus Aldridge, who suited up, but didn't play.

The win snapped a three-game losing skid, and came against the team they'll likely be battling for the NW Division crown. It's just the pre season, but had just lost to another divisional rival in Utah, and didn't want to drop another one to a division foe.

They'll get another shot at the Jazz on Tuesday night at the Rose Garden in game 7 of 8 in the exhibition season.

I was so angry when I left the game. The refs ruined it. All I have to say is look at Oden's last foul for reference. Also Roy getting knocked to the floor for his 5th foul. I can't watch a game with refs this bad.

Happy for Greg, he killed it. Lets get the real refs back.

Mike, I knew you would be here tonight. Thank you for the blog.

I listened to the game on levelhed on Justin TV. I also thought it was an important win. Antonio mentioned a sell out crowd at a exhibition game was almost unheard of. How about the fan fest? Everybody must have thought this was an important win.

JBay made another good contribution. Greg did steal the show though. WOW! What a player. That was cool, sure wished I could have seen the game.

I am not sure what BRoy's funk is, but sure am glad he pulled out of it in the fourth. That was the BRoy of last year with Greg battling with him.

Thanks for the write-up, MB. I can't wait until the season starts so I can actually watch the games! I'm glad you started updating regularly again, I always look forward to your posts.

I'm excited to see if Greg can string together a whole game of dominance soon. I bet that 5 minute run was good for his confidence though, he just needs to realize how much of a force he can actually be, maybe even get a little cocky, a la Dwight Howard.

I have been a member of the NBA's fan forum this summer and have taken part in many questionaires and commentaries, many of which were related to the officiating. Needless to say, I was not very flattering of the refs. I never thought I would say this, but they were stellar compared with these AAU guys they've got out there now. What a joke!

Nice to see the Blazers exercise the option on all these guys. I expect that it is just a prelude to the announcement that LMA's contract is done. It better be. I have heard the media spin this and say that the Blazers really have til the end of next season to get it done, as Aldridge will "only" be a "restricted" free agent and the team still, in essence, will be in control of the situation. While that may, "in essence," be true, it's complete BS. He is way too important to this team's success to string this thing out any further. There are 12 days left til LMA becomes a restricted free agent. What more do they need to analyze? GET LAMARCUS SIGNED NOW!!!!!! It is clear that he is bothered by this. C'mon, KP,
get it done.

RIPCITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do not support all-star preference. I do not like home court advantage because of referring. And I also think refereeing is a joke.

You have to get real about the referring though. These teams and players have been playing with this style referring since I don't remember when. Now all at once, they change the whole referring game. If all your life you had a curfew law that was never enforced then all at once it was decided to be enforced. How many citations would be handed out with inconsistency because of the newness of enforcing the law? The older officers would do it one way and the new one’s would do it the other.

That is what is happening now. It is not about calling it the right way or the wrong way, it’s about changing the game all at once. These players have been playing to the way the game has been called. Now, they haven’t the foggiest notion of how to play because of inconsistency, not calling the games the same way and not being able the change the way they play over night.

With one set of rules to be called the right way by every referee with no misunderstanding of the rule, the players would adjust to that. A foul is a foul no matter who fouls or when it is committed. That is not the way it has been called from the beginning, therefore you have to cut some leeway or go by past practice.

Right or wrong this is a spectators sport and no one will pay the price for tickets for long to watch a free throw contest.

The NBA will lose so much in ticket sales and revenues that it would be much better to pay the retirement.

A boycott would be the answer, but that is never carried through.

So, now instead of enjoying the BB game we can play the game of ain’t it awful?

Well, darn. Looks like hg is right again. I've nothing to add except that, if this is the way games are to be played shouldn't the allstar game just be a free throw contest? You know, avoid the risk of injury to the players.

I think we should call these refs what they are - scabs.

There is a strike going on and these scabs are diminishing the effect. I am a strong proponent of worker's rights and I believe that whatever industry you work in, you should have the ability, through striking, to stop that industry. The old refs are doing the only thing they can do to achieve the retirement benefits that they feel entitled to. While I may personally feel that their timing is poor, considering the recent lack of trust in the wake of a poorly called post season and the gambling fiasco, I support their right to strike. These scabs are taking that away and the effect is obvious.

David Stern, give these hard working people what they deserve: a secure future. Maybe with that, they won't feel compelled to look to the bookies...

I was not aware of how bad the referee situation was until I read Canzano's article in the paper today. The NBA come to a consensus before the regular season starts, because this is a joke.

fivehundreddogs- One correction. This is a lock-out, not a strike. The Referees would like to be officiating these games. The NBA has created this mess.

BigJohnson, you have a great point. The NBA wants money, who doesn't? So they will "help" certain teams win so that those citizens of the area will become fans. Look how much the Laker fans control the forums on the NBA website, yet look how many calls are made to help the Lakers. . .

But, there are also referees, professional referees, that hold grudges against players that they've had arguments with. Than there are those like Crawford who throw out T's whenever they feel like it (with a somewhat good reason).

The problem with the NBA will never be resolved until the NBA gets new management or the referees are Robots programmed to be fair.

I didn't listen or watch the game (video killed the radio star for me), but from seeing that Greg Oden had foul trouble and fouled out when he got incredibly hot doesn't surprise me. There were tons of "fouls" that were called on Greg because they feared that he would become the dominate player he is becoming.

A bit after the 4th started my pain pills were wearing off and I didn't feel like taking a few more percs so I told my wife lets go it's just a preseason game. She got the legs on my wheelchair and we were about to go when Oden came in. I said wait I want to see how Oden does. Well Oden took my pain away! Ended up watching the rest of the game. I'm so glad I didn't leave early!

What a performance by Oden! I couldn't believe some of his moves. The one when he was behind the backboard and threw it up and end showed a lot of finesse you wouldn't expect from such a large player.

This was the first game I was able to attend to see the difference in Oden and it is a big difference from last year. His game so fluid now compare to last year.

Watching Oden dominate in crunch time is just a small preview of what is ahead for us!

GO BLAZERS!!!

New idea for the possible starting five: How about SABOR. Steve, Aldridge, Batuum, Oden, Roy.

I think that will be the starting five until BRoy and Andre can start getting in sync.

Mike and Mike: pointed out on courtside the point guards are taking markable more shots then the interior players. That is not good in my book. If you alienate LMA, BRoy, and Greg from the 1, 2, and 3 options then our offense will suffer big time. If you live by the out-side shots you will definitely die by it more often then not. I hope that is because our other players other then Andre have had at least one game off.

I agree with the blogger Steven. We have the inside players in position let use them for some easy shots. Either by passing in or driving in and dishing.

MB,

HELP!!

When I log in to the page for season ticket holders I get a page saying why I should become a STH and can't go to the regular page with the forwarding tickets and other options! I was able to go to that part last week, but now I can't get past that stupid page with why I should become a STH and a video about the Big Als event. I've log in no problem, but when I click on for season ticket holders link I'm just took to that page. I've tried leaving a msg about the problem and have email the site about it with no response. This is very frustrating! I hope you might be able to help in some way. I've heard you got connections. :)

MB,

Concerning your question on Courtside about why change going with Roy. I think we still go with Roy, but having Oden and other players that can score just makes it easier for Roy. Look at the Sunday nite game after Oden fouled out, I seen a double/triple team on Roy. They couldn't have afforded to do that if Oden had still been in. Sure, Roy can still get the job done regardless, but he can't do it alone in a seven game series, plus he won't take the pounding that he would if he's double/triple teamed all the time.

Btw, I received a reply about the problem I was having. They are working on the problem and gave me a work around.

Jus' heard that referees will probably ratify the deal from the NBA.At least now we can go to back to bad calls from high paid professionals. They are streaming all the KGW games for 3.99 a game or 39.99 for all 15.What do you guys think about that?
