The Lighter Side of Roy
posted: 9/16/2009 at 5:07 PM

It's never a surprise to see Brandon Roy stroll into the Trail Blazers' practice facility well ahead of the start of training camp. It's also always very safe to predict that he'll be in a solid position, in terms of his physical condition.
What is a little different this September is Brandon's physical appearance. It's not just the new hairstyle, which is a cross between a faux hawk and a high and tight (sorry, no photo of the new look yet), it's that Roy looks noticeably slimmer. Is it just the haircut? Is that why even his face looks more chiseled?
"Nah, I've dropped some pounds," Roy laughs, and admits many people have noticed the new look. "The odd thing is, I didn't play much basketball during the summer months. In fact, it's pretty safe to say I hardly touched a ball."
So, what was the key, and why the change? After all, Roy had never been someone who was considered to be too heavy.
"After taking a little time off after the season ended, I just started swimming, like every single day. And, I really got into bike riding. After doing this for a while I stepped on the scale and I was at about 203 pounds. I played last season at about 216. I was like 'whoa,' and figured that was enough."
Roy claims the weight loss, for the most part, was unintentional, but that he did have a desire to come into camp lighter than he had been in the past. He hired a chef and got dedicated to eating healthier. That, combined with the workouts, made it easy to hit this new shape.
"I got to 205 so quickly, and then decided that was about time to head back the other way a bit. But, even now, I'm only at about 206. That's where I want to stay.
"Last season I came to camp at about 215, and that was intentional. I thought being a little bigger and bulkier would be better for me. But, I didn't like the way it felt. I feel so great physically right now, and I'm in great shape. I feel a little quicker, and I'm definitely lighter on my feet. I can feel it at the end of the day."
Roy has also found another way to get a little lighter on his feet- new footwear. Obviously, shoes are so vital to an NBA player's comfort and success. Brandon is a Nike guy, and last year searched to find the perfect shoe. He switched shoes a couple of times during the season and now has found the ideal wheels heading into this season.
The new Air Max Rise, is "it" for Brandon, he says. Thanks to many meetings with the basketball guys at Nike, and through work in the Sport Research Lab at Nike in Beaverton, they've hit on a winner.
"Lightweight is the new currency in basketball shoes," says Dan DeHaven, who's among those who have assisted Brandon in finding the right shoe. "Speed kills, and that's where Brandon's head is at right now. Take weight out of the product, and that's less weight to move around."
DeHaven says Roy's new shoe, which is a custom design of a shoe anyone can get off the shelf, is about 3 ounces lighter, per shoe, than what he was in last season.
"It's all about efficiency, and players will go in and out of shoes searching for the right weight and right stability," says DeHaven. "We've really concentrated on lightweight containment for him. Get the weight out of Brandon's shoe, and still make it extremely stable. Lateral movement, of course, is a huge part of his game, and the less the foot slides around in the shoe, the better.
"When he switched shoes last season we all learned from it," continues DeHaven. "Now, I can nail Brandon's fit. I know what works with his feet. Through constant communication we've tried to get him exactly what he's looking for. It's been a joy, because he's so great to work with."
Roy couldn't be happier with the work Nike has done for him, in searching for ways to hit on his theme of the off season- lighter is better.
"The new, lighter shoes have been a perfect compliment to what I've tried to achieve heading into this season," says Roy. "I told them I was getting lighter, and wanted something that would help me get there. A few ounces doesn't sound like a lot, but I can tell the difference."
So, coming off another all-star season, and his first trip to the playoffs, Roy has never felt more comfortable heading into an NBA training camp. New contract, new house, new chef, new shoes, new weight, and a couple of new teammates. But, as he says, "same old crossover."
That's the best news.
I'm panting running to the food bowl to find some
Brandon Roy news..
Thank you thank you thank you !!
I love this kid,I can't believe we've got us a genuine super star. A # 1 pick !!
That's really how it turned out.
But Andre and Oden are going to look mighty good with lobs, slam dunk !!
Hey MB!
let's go Blazers.....
Always good to read some bloggin from MB. I check ten times a day it seems for updates!
Off topic, but will the preseason games be televised?
~wxy
I can just imagine a even quicker Roy! It should help him on offense and defense.
GO BLAZERS!!
Excellent news. As if we needed yet another reason to love this guy. Brandon Roy is the Stepford Blazer.
Come on we need a picture of his new hair cut. It worries me that he say he barely played ball in the summer. Is that good? If you don't play for a while that can make your game suffer. Hope his handles and shot are still all star level.
Thanks for the neat and unique blog MB. I'm getting tired of all the Euroleague and Hall-of-Fame news. It's great to get some good ol Trail Blazer updates, especially since Jason Quick seems to be distancing himself on Rip City Revival (or perfecting them, hopefully). How about a pic of Brandon's new look?
Sounds good. I hope the stability is still there. We don't want rolled ankles now do we?
Good to hear good news about Brandon. I'm excited to see him start playing! Thanks for the update MB. Go Blazers!
MB.....No suprise BRoy is one of the first to arrive to camp.Leading by example. Did you say a quicker BRoy?He's such a chameleon. But because of his development from year to year ,I've come to expect it now.Not because of MY expectations of him,but knowing what he brings to the table .Thanx for keeping the excitement up in the dead time.
I'm glade that Brandon took time off from basketball. I think that's what everyone needs at some point in time
Can't wait to see him with his new figure and haircut. This year is going to be all BRoy. This is his year to shine and i bet he'll be great and i cant wait to watch :)
Go Blazers
Mike, what can I say? You know you are good.
I think with BRoy's knee problem from last year's heavy load the lighter weight will help. He is probably anticipating running the wing with Andre and getting in running shape plus BB shape. His stopping and going, his left and right lateral movement and endurance depends on being slim and trim or lean and mean :>).
There is a difference between being bulky and being strong. I prefer the strong because it gives you more endurance and Of course BRoy needs all the endurance he can get.
Thanks for the update on BRoy. It wouldn't hurt anybodies feelings if we were to get something like this from every player. Something similar to 1st day of training camp Mike gave to me an up date on BRoyeee. Tee hee, enough of that. You get the drift.
hg
Great players never lose a step...
...Brandon is the G.O.A.T.
MB thanks for the nice update on Roy! The guy is always aiming to improve, gotta love it. BRoyFTW, I wouldn't worry about Brandon's skills, Wheels doesn't call him The Natural for nothing! I think his workouts over the summer in the pool and on a bike will have him so conditioned he'll be able to do wind sprints around the court backwards.
BRoy seems like the kind of athlete that realizes it's good to get away from the game a little, and I have a feeling that while enjoying the solitude of a long bike ride, his mind was working at fever pitch to figure out ways he can improve. Plus he probably got to spend quality time with his family and you can't put a price on that.
Can't wait for the season to begin, GO BLAZERS!
Here are the shoes MB is talking about - Nike Air Max RIse
Lighter is always better! Bike riding is tops! This guy knows how to live...
I remember a quote from Bayless last season where he said something like,"I've never seen someone so slow fake people out like he does". After he said that, I started watching BRoy's moves to the hoop, and yeah, he looked like he was moving half as fast as everybody else, but he just out-smarted them and got to the rim anyway. A lighter Roy is just going to tear it up. I can't wait to see it... I also can't wait to see the hair!
Go Blazers.
My father started me down the road of Blazer fandom taking me to my first game forty years ago when it all started for this franchise. I did the same for my son twenty years ago. Now, the Mania has taken hold for all of us, and I can easily say that it will take a severe implosion by the management to ever change that. Thank you for your vision, Mr. Glickman.
The Trailblazers have given me alot to look forward to over the years; title runs, a championship, the promise of the future, and men to root for like Walton, Lucas, Carr, Kersey, Grant, etc. I can honestly say, though, that even with the Porters and Drexlers peppered throughout our history, Brandon Roy has easily, and quickly, become my favorite Blazer of all time. Obviously, he has just scatched the surface of the accomplishments of some of those famed players, but there is just something about him. While it definitely has much to do with his play on the court, for me, it is as much about the way he handles himself with humility, professionalism, and grace off of it.
RIPCITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In the battle of Rudy v. Nico, Rudy seems to have come out on top.
Spain cruised to a 86-66 victory over the undefeated French team, who suffered from foul trouble(21 PFs), turnovers(17), poor outside shooting(7/20), and lackluster performances from their normally unstoppable starting unit(Turiaf being the only one in double digits with 12pts). What many expected to be a wildly competitive game turned out to be a bit of a thrashing.
The Spanish team was led by a dynamite game from Pau Gasol, who tagged the French for 28pts on 85% shooting(11/13), dropped another 6 from the charity stripe, locked up the rim with 9 rebounds, and rounded out his numbers with an assist and 3 blocked shots. All that with only 1 personal foul.
Behind the elder Gasol was our boy, El Mago, hanging 16pts on the French, going 4/8 from behind the arc and unsurprisingly draining both free throw attempts. Batum seems to have contained his inside game though, as Rudy only went 1/4. However, what Batum could not stop were those quick hands. Fernandez picked 6 pockets today. Add 5 rebounds to that line and we should be very proud of our sophomore.
The real difference maker in today's game was the poor show that Tony Parker put on. He has been the backbone of this team, and he chose a terrible night not to show up. Parker eked out 6pts(4 from fouls), handed out a meager 3 assists, and turned the ball over 3 times in his 32 minutes of play.
Perhaps the highlight of the game though, came in garbage time, when Victor Claver poked his carrot top on the scene for 45 seconds to grab a rebound! But seriously, it came down to a Gasol v. Parker showdown, and I don't know if Pau had recently ground some bones to make his bread or what, but the contest went his way and the children of Poland will continue their shivering vigil...
In unrelated news, the infant mortality rate of the greater Las Angelas area fell sharply at the start of Eurobasket...
From my desk in Portland, this is Fivehundreddogs reporting. Back to you, Mike.
Lighter is better I think, unless a guy loses too much weight during the season and wears down toward playoff time. With the backups we've got, Coach should be able to get Brandon the rest he needs during the season.
On another topic, I like the addition of Howard! He's experienced and tough, something we lacked at times last season at the four.
can we get the graphics/animation department to work?
through the darkness and rain comes a rider, lights flashing in the distance. as the light approaches, it becomes more visible, the light flashing is white and red in the blazer logo. the rider becomes many. the lights become many. brandon roy on his bike with an army of fans in tow. swarming the rose garden on a rainy winter night, the armies of roy.
more seriously, signing juwan howard is pretty solid. even if he only plays a few minutes a game, you know that he won't get lost on defense or give-up the ball if a play runs through him. my original misgivings aside, this is a quality signing. now if only he could bring back his flat-top.
as for france vs. spain, you have to feel for nic. as long as they get a win in the losers bracket, they are in for the world championships, which is huge! there is no way that ronny turiaf can handle pau gasol though, even for a single game. rudy showed why he is such an effective complementary player in these big games, making huge offensive and defensive contributions.
espn360 is a wonderful thing...
Roy is THE man.
The Natural, too :D
He could play with his bare foots and still own his foes.
But well, I'm glad he found out a good shoe to wear.
Though this post seemed a lil' bit Nike-headed, it's great to see some news about our guy.
Thx MB, keep up the good work
GO BLAZERS
It was a great show on Court side tonight. Everybody was in great spirits and it was fun.
hg
Lighter Roy could solve a lot of the Blazers' problems. I know we've had this conversation before, but I just love to peel back the scab: Roy at point guard, Rudy at shooting guard. Let's make it happen!
With that little move, Bayless can squeak into the rotation as the backup 2. I would love to see what a back court of Andre and Jerryd could do! I really do see Miller as the future Bayless, so playing those two together would give the younger man a chance to see firsthand what he could become. Blake is, once again, the odd man out, but who doesn't see that on the horizon? Love ya, Blakey, but we're going on a long trip and we're going to need our best driver at the helm, and that man is BRoy. Also, Rudy needs minutes and I don't see him getting them at the 3.
Reading about Rudy's performance at Eurobasket has been a real eye-opener. Casey Holdahl has done a fantastic job of keeping us up to date on that competition(if you're reading this Casey, thanks) and what really struck me was how the Iberians apparently run their offense through El Mago. I'm not terribly surprised, considering the insane passes he has been known pull off, but it does get me wondering what it would be like to have Roy and Rudy taking turns at the 1 and 2. Could be dynamite.
I think that might be what we see going into the playoffs. Also, I see a move happening at the deadline involving Outlaw and Blake in exchange for a young backup power forward(who? I don't know). Then, if Bayless can handle it yet, Miller's contract expires at the end of the year and Rex takes that 2nd PG spot once and for all. Finally, Patty Mills blows us all away with his performance in Summer League and joins the team as the 3rd option at the 1.
Those are my predictions for the future of the point guard position. What do y'all think? Reasonable? Insane? Idiotic? Prophetic? I wait for your responses with great antici...pation.
Go Blazers.
it is not possible for me to be any bigger of a fan of the rudy/roy backcourt. hopefully coach nate feels this way too.
and, i would love to see patty mills signed mid-season if not sooner. it really was a shame that he was injured.
p.s. can we arrange for a rudy vs. roy meeting in the gold medal game of the 2010 world championships?
p.p.s. check this out...

p.p.p.s. my last one for tonight, i swear.
http://www.broy7.com/roy/blogDetail/2038
i think your wrong 5 dogs for more then one reason. blake an trav for a back up power forward that will play 13 min a game thats just dumb. why would we get howard? patty is hurt and has not shown us that he fits. bayless could not handle tha point in summer league so why on earth do you think he can beat out blake for the back up. then just say miller gets hurt then are starting point guard would be bayless then patty for the back up. no way. to many holes in your plan. I could keep going but this is to easy.
Quinientos Perros...........Damn,didn't yer mom tell you you not to pick the scabs..I know a few people are enamored with this combo. My first point is that Blake would be the odd man out.I just don't think that is going to happen. Two,I think we are going away from Broy having the ball as much.I think,as he does every year,BRoy wil become better off the ball.I can't see Dre or Blake not starting. It is a combo that we could explore, just not starting.I also think that Blake or Dre need to be there to set the table. BLAZERSROCK
I can't wait for season to start! Finally a reason to turn on the TV again! NBA PLAYOFFS 2010!

fivehundreddogs:
What you propose for the Blazer's guards will not be viable. Steve, Andre, Broy, and Rudy are the most effective guards that we have in order to win games. Bayless is just not there yet. NO WAY do we want any more trades. Forget it.
I agree with fan man. We have two true PGs in Miller and Blake. Both can play the position well so we finally have a good starter and back up. I don't want to change that. I'm not going to say which one is going to be the back up, don't need to start that argument, but I don't want to lose either one. Just let Nate decide.
While Bayless might be our PG of the future he isn't ready now. Plus what if we have a injury at PG? We'd really be sorry then if we traded Blake.
How can we have such great athletes and jumpers, yet get outrebounded by 5 boards a game. IMO,we need to prioritize that this year.It maybe goes back to that toughness discussion again. Its still boils down to who wants the ball more.Rebounding and Defense wins championships.Yeah Golden State scores a lot of points ,but did they make the playoffs ? No. IMHO a certain couple players who shall remain nameless because we have already gone there, need to turn into rebounders ASAP if we want to go to the next level.
DtV,
Where do you get your stats? At NBA.com it shows that we out rebound our opponents by over 5 rebounds.
http://www.nba.com/statistics/sortable_team_statistics/sortable2.html
We are 13th in team rebounds which isn't great, but it's far from terrible.
I think we were among the best at offense rebounds, but I couldn't find that stat. We could definitely improve and I completely agree D wins championships and I think both rebounding and D will improve this season.
Looking at those stats I notice we actually have the largest positive difference of any team at +5.41.
OK guys, settle down now and read the comment you're attacking. Nowhere in my comment did I say that Bayless would be playing point guard this season. Even in the case of an injury, we have five players that can play point other than Jerryd(Roy, Rudy, Blake, Andre and Nico).
I wrote, "Then, if Bayless can handle it yet, Miller's contract expires at the end of the year and Rex takes that 2nd PG spot once and for all." Notice that bit about Miller's contract expiring? That's the end of the season, people. Get a grip.
The point of my post was mainly to suggest Roy starting at the 1, which nobody seems to want to comment on. We've had the Bayless discussion a million times; he is the most polarizing guy on the team, so I'm not surprised that he drew the most attention. So in plain English: Bayless would not play any point guard this season in the plan I outlined. Happy?
Millertime, you're right, I didn't think the trade thing through. I bet we'll just let those guys contracts expire at the end of the season rather than involve them in a trade. We'll still be able to use Blake as a third option at the 1 and Outlaw for the occasional scoring kick at the 3 or 4. I'm just trying to look down the line and I don't see either of those guys in the future; I just got ahead of myself. I also forgot about the two PFs we picked up in the draft. I think we're pretty good at that spot, so I rescind entirely my proposal for a trade. However, you too are guilty of not thoroughly reading the comment; your comments regarding Mills make that obvious.
I wrote, "Patty Mills blows us all away with his performance in Summer League and joins the team as the 3rd option at the 1." So your observations about him being injured and unproven are inconsequential. I was writing of the future Patty Mills, who will prove himself to be a great point guard for this team.
So come on guys, I invited some spirited discussion on the topic, but y'all didn't even pay me the respect of reading my comment before attacking it. It's as though Bayless' name came up and a blind rage overtook all else, preventing the rest from sinking in.
The only even-headed criticism was delivered by way of MGB, whose well-worded comment pointed out the strength we have already at the 1, the folly of a trade and the cooking time still needed before the Bayless souffle rises, all without coming off as an illiterate madman. So thanks MGB. I am curious though, what do you think of a Roy/Rudy back court? Also, since Rex isn't ready to play point, do you think he could contribute at shooting guard behind Rudy? Finally, do you think we'll sign Blake to another contract?
Anyhow, I'm glad to have gotten a reaction, even though it was mostly negative(except for you Travis: keep it real!) It was getting pretty slow around here.
Go Blazers.
bayless could play effectively with either rudy &/or roy. he could guard the opposing point guard, while rudy or roy handle the ball and guard the opposing 2 guard.
my guess is that blake is here to stay. my other guess is that miller will probably leave after two seasons (at age 35). the question is, will bayless be able to maximize the opportunity to learn and grow without wanting to leave for more playing time elsewhere. my hope is that they all see things in terms of the longer scope, and realize that they are all part of what could be an historic team.
MGB,.....my bad,I got the stats from the Blazer team stats .I could be wrong. My wife should post. She's never wrong
500Dogs.............My personal point had nothing to do with JBay.In my post ,I commented about trying not to wear down BRoy .I think he puts enough on his shoulders for this team, thus risking injury. Which we don't need. So,I poo poo the idea of BRoy at the point. Also with the ever evolving Roy ,and the adddition of Dre,we might see Roy play a bit more off the ball.He said he wouldn't mind running the wing a bit more, getting EASY baskets.
Fivehundreddogs:.
I never commented on your post because I get in deep doggy doo when I post too much. With fivehundreddogs that would be a lot of doggy doo LOL.
Anyway the day after you post, I made a post to Don Wayne at http://myteamrivals.typepad.com/trailblazers/. (Blazer talk) I told him of your thoughts on BRoy losing wt. And have him play PG with Rudy at SG. He said it would be a great starting unit with Batuum or Martell, LMA and Greg. Nobody in the NBA could compare to them. I can't find the post but it was in one of the comment sections I think. But he corresponded to me directly at times so I am not sure.
He thought your Idea could work out great, and I agree with him. All the trading and who plays the backup and such are all up to the front office.
Most posters don’t read the whole post.
hg
I think it would be great also.
I often wonder what continues to draw me to this blog site. It certainly can't be the comraderie. There are those who choose to ignore me and still others who simply tolerate my interjections. In my minds eye I can envision certain individuals who believe the sound of their own voice serenades our ears like the creamy, soothing barretone of a Barry White, when in reality it's more like Alvin the Chipmunk. I finally concluded that it is not wisdom I am seeking, nor to be enlightened by the guru who can tell me what Brandon Roys' favorite color is, or Rudys' free throw percentage on days following a lunar eclipse. I am drawn to people who live their lives with passion. The Lord said that He would rather us be hot or cold, but because we are luke warm, He will spew us out of His mouth. Yes, 500 dogs, I think I got it right this time. Truthfully, I would miss some of those who frequent this sight even if I don't always agree with some of the b.s. I have to wade thru. Even you Vinnie.
Oh phi slamma, you card! Always there to mix it up!
You're addicted to this site for the same reason the rest of us are: you love basketball. What sets you apart from the rest of us is that the rest of us sometimes talk about basketball, whereas your witty interjections(and they are witty) are usually character attacks, tossed into the melee without committing to any one opinion.
My grandpa does the same thing. He loves to sit outside an argument, with a delighted little grin on his face, and take a side long enough to spit some venom and get things really heated up. Then, when it starts to get real crazy, he switches sides. Crazy old coot just likes to see folks loose it!
So that may be a little window into your future phi slamma. If you end up half as happy as my grandpa, you will have done pretty well for yourself.
But uh, got anything to say about basketball? Or is it just gonna be Bible verses and low blows?
Go Blazers.
You da man. How do you do it MB? Please tell me your secret. If I had the life you live I would be the king of the world. How?
MB u r really something special. Lets go blazers! Lets go! Big time fan since 1973. Thank-you for all you have done.
Say something about basketball? Damn it man! I'm a physcologist not a stat machine. Alright, how bout them Red Sox? Uh,I think Ime Udoka was a fine pickup, and there's going to be a lot of weanies competing for the flame in camp this year. If you count Outlaw, maybe even a marshmellow or two. The day I see Travis taking a charge will be the day I retract that statement. I don't see Brandon playing the point nearly as much this year because our point guard tandem is much improved.
To say I stay outside a discussion without picking a side would make me indecisive. In life I surely am not. However, your observations are always meaningfully thought out and well received.
Aww.......... The ever lovable Phi Slamma. Are you saying that you would miss me or my BS.I'm just glad we have a BS moderater,Lord knows we need one.I wouldn't want you to ever feel ignored,It's just HG and I are getting so close that I just don't have time for you any more. It isn't you ,its me! .By the way ,I agree that Outlaw needs to up his defense AND rebounding, especially at the PF position. We already know he can score,he has to work on the intangibles.Thanx 4 the shoutout anyways. I know its your own way of reaching out.
five hundred doggies.............One part estute -one part devilish. You may have just a bit of that grandfather in yourself ,lobbing out those little grenades now and then. That being said .It is the reason we all put up with each others rants,we all love bball, and whats not to love about this team.I appreciate the diversity in posts here, though I've been B slapped here a few times. Thats what makes me come back. I like the the discussions ,I actually learn things now and again.Training camp- Tues the 29th. I am truly psyched about what battles we will have in camp.
anyone wanna read this article and tell me what your reaction is?
http://www.nba.com/2009/news/09/25/nuggets.ready.ap/index.html
hopefully they really enjoyed their 2008-2009 experience.
finishing 3rd in the NW is going to suck for them, and then coach karl will be elsewhere...
Watching the Lakers face the Nuggets in the conference finals was a nightmare. My two least favorite teams in the west. I was hoping that somehow Birdman's hair would catch fire, spread to the bleachers, and burn the Staple Center to the ground, leaving only Nene miraculously unharmed who, seeing no alternative, would come to Portland.
As far as their chances this season, I'd agree that 3rd in the west is about right. Maybe even 4th, with LAL taking 1st, us at 2nd, and SAS in 3rd. The thing is, while most of the west got better through the draft and Free Agency, The Thuggets stagnated and actually backslid by losing Kleiza(unless Afflalo and Lawson blow up).
But hey, who knows, maybe Smith got some new moves in jail. Maybe he'll dive for more loose balls. ZING!
Go Blazers.
i was on vacation sorry. why would we want bayless playing the 2 if he is going to be are point guard. he needs to learn how to run a team not score the ball. we know he can score but we have better more efficient scores in roy and La. the blazers management have already stated that they want brandon to play off the ball more so no point guard for b. why would we get miller? i think bayless will prob be are point guard in a few years but he is not ready yet.
comcast sucks go blazers
Travis.....My initial reaction is ............ J.R. Smith will decide to grow up and oh yeah .........GO will become a three point threat.Brandon will become a Ballhog,Nate will substitute freely and were gonna get David Lee for JBAY.Yeah ,all those things will definitely happen.I think Chauncy is the glue there.Martin and NENE have been injury prone.Carmello is a top notch scorer. OK,Sure ,they got a bunch of guards, but that doesn't help them up front. And losing Dahntae Jones didn't help .Whos their def stopper, now?I just think our depth is gonna kill teams like Denver.Whos backing up the bigs,Birdcrap, maybe, just don't look for offensive production from him. BLAZERSROCK
Hey B Roy!
Let's see what those new shoes can do tonight!
Gooooo Blazers!
