Interviews from Courtside
posted: 9/11/2008 at 10:21 PM

Things don't officially get underway for a few weeks, but everyone is ramping up in anticipation of training camp, the pre-season, and of course, the regular season. We've been trying to keep you up to date on what's happening at the Trail Blazers' practice facility, and Thursday night on Trail Blazers Courtside, our weekly radio show, we were joined by three players- Brandon Roy, Channing Frye, and Jerryd Bayless.

As you know, Roy and Frye are recovering from surgeries, and we got the latest on their rehab efforts. Brandon is cooking right along, and said it's killing him not to be playing in these pre-camp pick-up games with his teammates. Frye, who just had surgery on his ankle on Monday to remove bone spurs, is probably 7 or 8 weeks away from returning to full-contact action.

We also talked to rookie Jerryd Bayless, who has been very impressive so far in the pick-up games, following his very strong summer league, where he earned MVP honors in Las Vegas. You're probably aware of Jerryd's reputation for being a hard-nosed player, and he expanded on that, and other things.

This week's edition of Trail Blazers Courtside is now available for podcasting in its entirety.

Mike

those were great interviews.

I still worry about Jerryd being a ball hog. I also think he wants lots and lots of playing time, therefore he will be doing the things that are asked of him apposed to doing it his way. In that respect I think he will be alright. But, the old saying goes talk is cheap, it is time to get expensive by if you talk the talk you have to walk the walk.

Channing Frye will be a great broadcaster. I already think he is a great player, but don't know how he will fit.

I know BRoy can adjust his game to anything. But he needs his touches and controls the offense.

Things are getting better and better
I started my bowling leagues and basket ball is just around the corner.

One game at a time

Thanks for the posts MB. I am chomping at the bit for anything about the team. I didn't know courtside was back. Are guys set for every Thursday now? Will there be any more breaks for you guys?

Has everyone come to practice yet? I am really interested to hear how Greg does against Joel. I keep hearing how Greg is killing everyone else. I think Joel will be a good test for Greg to prepare him for the tough beginning of the year.

Good Stuff Mike! Any chance we can get some highlight videos? I wonder why Jerryd picked the number 4? Does it have anything to do with the fact that he was expected to go 4th in the draft?

Jerryd seems to be much more relaxed with the media than he was around the draft. That is good to hear. I'm very excited to see what he does this year!

"Donuts at 7 in the morning? I don't know about that"...lol Mike I didn't know you played video games. You have to buy NBA 2k9 October 7th. Early screenshots show Bayless as the starting PG. I really want to see if the rated Aldridge and Roy fairly. Blazers got no respect in last years game. Great interviews, I like them all.

hg-

I'm confused, is Jerryd going to hog the ball or do what the coach asks him? Is hogging the ball NOT doing things your own way? Why would he not want lots of playing time? No one really knows how he'll pan out until we see him on the floor.

I believe Bayless will do what Jack used to do (attack basket go to the line) but hopefully with less turnovers and better overall vision of the court, and better passing and overall abilities.

That was the point of the trade right? Pun intended.

Is Batum playing in the pickup games. If not , is he going to be on the 15 person roster?

Hi, Mike, great stuff, as always.

Perhaps I've been a bit off through the summer, but I'd like to know about JB's performance with US Select team. Did he shine? did he show out having point guard skills?

I like his attitude but I can't help thinking he is rather a Rudy and BRoy type player than a point guard. I hope he can prove that wrong.

I see I didn't explain my explanation well.Lol.

I was meaning that Jerryd by nature looks like a ball hog. If he was to hog the ball Nate would bench him until he could or would play in the system. I think Jerryd is smart so he already has figured this out and will play in the system to get more playing time.

That is what I was meaning by also wanting the playing time. I was just thinking that it is either hogging the ball or being a distributor. No offense intended. And I agree with you about playing JJ's way. I am just not sure he will pass it out if his shot didn't materialize or force the shot and pray.

On the talk show he was saying all the right things but was just wondering if he would do as he says or says one thing and do the other. Actually I am somewhat confused with what he will do. :)

Whoa...whoa...whoa..

Who else read the Yahoo! Sports article?

"Livingston worked out in Portland on Friday, and two league sources believed the Blazers are the favorites to sign the ex-Los Angeles Clippers guard."

MB, you need to investigate that. Though the article did state that he won't contribute this year but will be a long-term prospect.

But maybe he will be used as trade bait as Miami and Minnesota also are dying to sign him.

Blogger BRoyFTW said...

Why would the Blazers sign yet another point guard? One that won't contribute for a year at that. The Blazers would pay him 1 million to rehab so we have an option to resign him next year? I like the idea that Livingston could have a miracle come back and play to his potential, but that's fantasy at this point. His knee is totally destroyed.

It's great to be concerned about minutes and chemistry. But I'm worried about not getting to see the Blazers on tv here in Silverton (and most of the state) for the SECOND STRAIGHT SEASON. With none of the dish providers and very few of the state's cable companies picking up the CSN package, the Blazers have left those of us who have supported the team even through the rough years with no way of watching our team. It's not only unfair and bad business, it's a violation of the 25-point pledge. The blazers must be a part of the solutions. Step in and make these companies come to agreement. Canzano and others say Comcast is charging three times the going national rate. Is that true? the Blazers need to step in and make this right.... for the fans!

Mike, Thank you for your updates.

I'm sure you will not let this comment pass on through to the viewers of your column as it's a negative against the Blazer Mgt and organization, however, I'm going to write it anyway, if for nothing else to vent my anger and dissappointment in the blazer Mgt.

First of all, I've been a very active fan since 1976 and had a number of years where I purchased yearly season tickets, and even was a huge supporter through all the tough years.
I'm getting to the age where it's difficult to even leave the house so, I haven't been able to attend any of the games due to health problems.

My anger stems in the fact that the Blazer organization let Comcast try to pull a huge scam on a large number of blazer fans that use satellite as their TV company.

Now the come-back on the blazer Mgt. side is " they have no control over what comcast does" .....THEY WILL-- never get me to believe that.

Now before someone starts crying out.... " buy Comcast " or "go to a bar to watch". I can't afford to buy comcast, and my health won't allow going to a bar.

As far as keeping their old fan base, I'm sure the Blazer mgt. could care less now, since they have sold out the Rose Garden seats, ........and who cares whether this old goat gets to watch his Blazers or not.

I've got to chirp in on the Comcast scenario. Last year, living in Eugene, I had Comcast and it was great. I got to see all of the games and it was pretty great. Now however, I live outside of the area where one can get Comcast (large geographic area of Oregon) and I can only get 13 games this entire season. 13 games!

Blazers management has some of the best business lawyers in the country and you're telling me they didn't know they could've got the fans into this situation?

This is a travesty foisting this on die hard Blazer fans around the state who have supported this team through some very good and very bad times. Blazer management needs to step in and do what they can to make this happen.

Any news on if the Blazers will pursue any kind of broadcast in Washington with Seattle now OKC? I just recently moved to Washington and am hoping the Blazers will capitalize on the open market

Felix: " I like his attitude but I can't help thinking he is rather a Rudy and BRoy type player than a point guard. I hope he can prove that wrong. "

Unfortunately, unless Jerryd has changed a lot in just a few short months, you're not wrong. He is not a point guard. He's a winner, and he'll do what his coach asks of him, but he'll never be a point guard. As an Arizona fan, I say that after watching him in both high school and college.

I'd like to think he can improve ballhandling and passing. I just don't think it's going to happen on the pro level. Kids can learn in college; once they get to the pros, it's a much more difficult proposition.

http://basketball.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/59669/20090608/report_blazers_will_trade_rodriguez_to_knicks_on_draft_night/

"According to a report from Yahoo-Eurosport, the Knicks will acquire Sergio Rodriguez in a draft night trade.

Sources from the Knicks say the two sides have had a deal agreed upon for almost three weeks.

Mike D'Antoni is reportedly driving the interest in the Portland point guard."

It looks as if sergio will be gone on draft day. I wonder why they are waiting so long, could there be a trade brewing for that 8th pick (though the knicks have been trying to get second rounders)
