TV Schedule Out
posted: 9/24/2007 at 1:53 PM

The Trail Blazers' TV schedule is now being released for the upcoming season, and the first thing you'll notice is that every single game will be televised. It's the first time in franchise history we can say that.

There will also be 34 games televised high definition, and more Blazer programming than ever before. We've also added a studio host, a studio analyst, and a sideline reporter. A brand-new studio at the Rose Garden is being constructed as we speak, and that's where the pre and post-game shows will be hosted.

As you probably know, a new sports network, Comcast SportsNet (CSN) is launching in November, and that's where most of our new programming will be. We'll have 53 games on CSN, and 24 on KGW Northwest Newschannel 8, who has been a great partner over the years. Included, is one pre-season game, on October 24th, against Seattle.

So, we'll be broadcasting 77 Blazer games (including that one pre-season game). The remaining six regular-season games not covered on KGW or CSN will be on TNT. Six games are scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN, and seven will be shown on NBA TV. Those 13 games, on ESPN and NBA TV, we'll broadcast as well, on either CSN or KGW.

Our first broadcast of the season will be that pre-season game on KGW on October 24th. Because the regular-season opener is on TNT, we won't see you until the second game, on November 2nd, at New Orleans. That game will be on CSN. The very next night, we'll have the Blazers and Rockets, from Houston, on KGW.

There will be 30 games broadcast in high definition on CSN, and 4 on KGW.

I'll be back for my 5th season in the play-by-play chair, and my partner will once again be Mike Rice. This will be season number 18 for him, and his third as the full-time TV analyst.

Of course, on the radio side, every game in the regular and pre-season will be broadcast on the Trail Blazers Radio Network. Brian Wheeler is back for his 10th season, and Antonio Harvey will be next to him for his 3rd season. Jay Allen will host the pre and post-game shows on radio.
KXL Newsradio 750 will once again be the flagship station for the radio network.

Joining us, personnel wise, on the TV side is Tony Luftman, formerly the sideline reporter for the Memphis Grizzlies. He'll be the studio host for the pre, halftime, and post-game shows on CSN and KGW. Joining Tony in the studio will be former Trail Blazer, and former University of Portland basketball coach, Michael Holton. We've also added a sideline reporter for the upcoming season. Rebecca Haarlow, who has worked the sidelines for the Big Ten Network, the Kings, and Warriors, will join us from FSN Los Angeles.

When it kicks off, Comcast SportsNet will be located on channel 37 on Comcast cable systems, and will be available on expanded basic. In other words, if you have ESPN, you'll have Comcast SportsNet. Comcast is currently working on getting carriage for Comcast SportsNet Northwest on all other cable systems, and satellite providers. Comcast has been successful in getting satellite carriage in all the other markets that have a Comcast SportsNet. Hopefully we'll have news on that in the coming weeks.

More games, more broadcasters, more shows, more HD, and the most coverage ever. We're excited to get it going. The game-by-game TV schedule will be available with the formal release. You'll be able to find it on the front page of this website.

Good Post Mike - I love your blog but I have to say I am a die hard blazers fan I stuck with them through thick and thin but if comcast does not seal a deal with the satellite companies, I don't know what I will do!! I have Dish network and to get the same exact package I get from Dish for $34.99 I have to pay $20 more a month $54.99!! This could send me over the edge to the point were I will feel the team has failed its fans the most! A deal must be struck soon!

At the risk of sounding chauvanist, you're going to have a female sideline reporter?

Sigh.

Hyper bully,

She's great. You'll be thanking us very soon.

duckfan7315,

I've been told not to worry at all about this. So, I'm telling you the same thing. No one in our office has control over the negotations, but they'll get it done. Comcast SportsNet has delievered for their other markets. They'll do it here. Nice win, in that let-down game against Stanford, by the way.

hyper bully,

common thats not nessasary, a female can do just as good of a job as any male look at TNT they have a female sideline reporter. that was very *shovanistic*.

Mike Barret once again another helpful blog thank you.
I cant wait for the season to start! Hey can fans at the rose garden come up to the broadcasters and talk is that allowed? thanks

Any word on if Charter cable will pick up CSN for us Southern Oregon fans? Last year was tough without most of the KGW games. I hope it all gets worked out ahead of time this season.

Every game televised?

This is every bit a "franchise-defining moment" to me as winning the lottery was.

It's about time! I hope it all works out for the folks without comcast.

Hi Mike,

I see one glaring omission from your list of TV and Radio personnel. Will Bill Schonley continue working for the Blazers or has he/the Blazers decided it is time for him to retire?

great job as always Mike. when you say they are working on getting this station on all other cable systems does that include Time warner cable? will they let us know what cable networks they have agreed with? im also working on getting KGW news 8 but i dont think its going to happen. ill just have to get league pass again if everything else fails. cant wait 35days left.

steve,

Yes, the Schonz is very much a part of things. I guess I kind of figured that was assumed, but I probably shouldn't have.

blazerfan4life,

We'd love to be able to broadcast our games in Seattle, but we can't. That's outside our designated market. We used to broadcast games in Boise, but that's now designated as Utah Jazz territory. If you're outside our market area, you can get every single Blazers game by purchasing League Pass, of course. Very much worth the small investment.

Thanks for all the comments. Again, I realize there are worries about CSN getting immediate carriage, on satellite, and around the state on cable. I'm very confident it will get done, by the start of the season. Looking at the history of these things, they usually happen in the 11th hour. That's not a comfort, I realize, but it will get done. Believe me, we're in a much, much better situation with Comcast SportsNet. The new deal with them has allowed us to broadcast every game, hire new people, build a new studio, do more HD games. In short, everything is going to be better. Any time you start up a brand-new network it's going to take some work to get it put on every provider. I do think this will get done by the time the season starts. Again, Comcast SportsNet's other markets are New York, Sacramento, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., and Chicago. They're taking over other markets soon as well. They negotiate carriage contracts all the time, and that's why I'm not worried about this. I'll continue to do my best to answer your questions about it.

hey MB, league pass is great and all but they do have black out games so you miss about 4-5 games. they say you get to see all games but you dont. the other thing and the thing i think is the worst part about league pass is half or more of the games are picked up by the other teams network. i have seen more than my share of bad announcers. trust me you and Rice are the best in the biz!!

MB,

Thanks for the blog.

I sure hope the BLAZERS are putting pressure on Comcast to make sure a deal with Directv gets done (ASAP).

Why only 34 games in HD? Less than half?!?!

Thanks again.

Barrett...great stuff here. Have grown up a Blazer fan since I was a kid with the Rip City days.

I have to admit that I am not very excited about Comcast planning on playing "Jack my Price up" with the satellite providers as the season draws near. Everyone keeps saying it will get done, but do you have a timeline of when?

Why are some home games (and away for that mattter) broadcast in HD and not others?? Seriously, once you have it, the games are unwatchable when not in HD.

hi Mike,

I still can't find the detailed game-by game "broadcast" schedule on the blazers.com. All I can see is the national TV broadcast schedule and local TV is all blank.

Do you know when that will come up? Thanks.

I dont know about that video on the front of the website. I liked gregs video that was on his blog, in which he basically said the same thing but you could tell he was being himself and being real. I think the blazers front office needs to backoff and let greg be greg or else it just looks fake and forced. Seeing greg all dead serious in the websites video is just not the real greg oden and you can tell he was told to do this after he already put out his real video on his blog. Please let him just write and say what he wants with out your scrpits cause thats why we all fell in love with guy in the first place. So backoff suits!

Allen35 was right on the mark, saying that the organization would do well to allow the players to just be themselves. As we've all known for a long time, Portland treats the Blazers like a small town treats its high school squad, and the loyalty comes from old-fashioned sports enthusiasm, identification, and a keen appreciation of the game. We really didn't need the gimmicks in the Rose Garden (although they're nice), and we're suspicious of things that look too "big city." Yes, suits, just allow Portland to know, love, and cheer the team- the guys we like appreciate it, too.
